I'm an American living in Brasil. I've been trying various Brazilian wines while living here and I would agree that currently the sparkling wines are the best choice along with some rosés. The reds are improving. I actually haven't seen many whites on sale here. In general Brazilians don't seem to drink much white wine which is a bit odd given the hot summers.

I will say what disappoints me most is that the government keeps increasing taxes on imported wines. This is supposedly to grant the local producers an advantage, but all it really does is reduce the number of people who will try good wine and become wine drinkers. What the government should be doing is offering tax breaks to the local producers while lowering the import duties for good wines. That way, as people try and come to enjoy wine, the local producers will have continued to improve their product and it would lead to much larger sales.

In the meantime, if you can find it, try the Bellavista Estate Bueno Assemblage or the RAR Reserva de Famiília CS/Merlot. I believe both are produced by Miolo.

Sparkling wine is by far our best product. The reds are coming up but from a different region of our state where the weather is dry and cool. Very good review!

I'm a NOVA native, too (well I've lived here on and off for over 30 years, so I count that as native). I've never tried Maryland wine, either. At least not to my knowledge. Anxious to hear your impressions . . . have fun at the conference! Salud!!

Borolo is one of my favorites. They do tend to start on the pricey side and the starting price for most Borolos is north of $40 but I have found two that are pretty good and under $30. One is the Santero Borolo & the other is Terri de Bo. I was skeptical when I first bought them but was happy I did. Try 'em when you get the chance and let me know what you think.
