Drink it now!

We had a bottle of 2005 David Coffaro Pinot Noir to drink tonight. It cost us $25 at David Coffaro and had a screw-cap closure which was nearly impossible to open. I paired it with garlic herb chicken, mashed potatoes and steamed green beans.

Currants, spice and a hint of vanilla on the nose. In the mouth, cherries. And just a bit of spice. It’s incredibly smooth. There isn’t a hint of a tannin or any bite in this wine. I would suggest drinking it now or fairly soon. It didn’t need to be decanted at all, except for the fact that there is quite a bit of sediment since this is an unfiltered wine.

After an hour, I got raspberries on the nose and in the mouth. What I found odd about this wine was that it looked like a much older Pinot Noir, the color was darker and less ruby than most young Pinot Noirs. Overall, this was a delicious wine and quite a value for $25! Perhaps the layering of flavors that appears actually suggests that it could be aged longer. However, I must say, it taste pretty darn good the way it is.

  1. Hmmm, odd looking bottle for a California Pinot. maybe some Petit Sirah made it into the final blend.

  2. I’ve never heard of Coffaro but could this be a slightly off bottle? Colouring and closure troubles usually make me think of that. Have you got any more in your shipment to compare it to?

  3. Barrld, I don’t know. I can’t find any info about the wine online and the empty bottle may have already gone in the trash. Matt throws them away as fast as I will let him.

    Marcus-I don’t think it was off. It tasted really good and the flavors were similar, if not a little more developed than they were in my notes from visiting Coffaro. I only got the one bottle, so nothing to compare it to. It was a great bottle of wine, I was just surprised it would be drinking this smoothly this quickly. Dinner was tasty, thanks!

  4. I love David Coffaro wines – I have met him several times actually at his vineyard in Sonoma. If you visit he usually is around and is very friendly. Glad you enjoyed 🙂

  5. Leah, we did visit Coffaro, though we only saw David Coffaro for a minute as he wandered in and out of the garage/barn/tasting area. It was definitely an experience to visit there!
