*Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from the PR folks for Wines of Chile.
Cabernet Cabernet Cabernet. Oddly enough, we’ve been drinking a fair bit of Cabernet Sauvignon in the last week. Strange, since we don’t drink much of it regularly…most of the stuff in our basement is young and needs a few years before it will be ready to drink. This evening we chose the 2004 Santa Rita Medalla Real Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile to drink. It had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14.5% alcohol by volume, and retails for around $19.
On the nose I found black fruit, vanilla cream, pie, black currants, blackberries, herbs, licorice, spice, and pepper. In the mouth I got dark fruit, black cherry, black currants, herbs, espresso, raisins, and bitter notes. I almost thought I tasted some blueberry in there too. The wine seemed rough around the edges still and almost a bit port like on the finish. I found it to be really tannic and in need of some time or decanting.
