Zin into Fall

A distinct chill entered the air this week. It’s in the low 60s when I walk to work in the mornings, and doesn’t get much over 72 or so by the height of the day. This is my favorite time of year. It’s still warm enough to really enjoy sitting outside and it’s time to think about cooler weather wines…meaning reds!  We tasted this 2006 Marietta Cellars Sonoma County Zinfandel at my parents’ house while visiting last weekend.  It had a real cork closure, clocked in at 15.2% alcohol by volume, and that’s pretty much all I can tell you about it other than the fact my dad bought it at Branford Wine and Spirits!  I think he might have mentioned it cost around $17 a bottle.

On the nose I found blackberry, bramble fruit, earth, dark fruit, black fruit, spice, pepper, and black currant.  I definitely sensed some heat on the nose, though it seemed to integrate as the wine aired.  In the mouth I found smooth black fruit, licorice, blackberry, fruit roll up on the finish, and dusty tannins.  I also got a bit of heat of again, though with time in the glass it integrated.
