A Chardonnay Kind of Day

I enjoyed the Davis Bynum Pinot Noir that I tried 2 weeks ago so much that I quickly jumped back into that box to pull out the other bottle of Davis Bynum wine I had. I’m not really a huge Chardonnay person in general, though if they aren’t over-oaked, over-maloactic-ed hot messes I can find beauty in them. So tonight we tried the 2007 Davis Bynum Russian River Valley Chardonnay. It had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14.9% alcohol by volume, and retails for $25.

On the nose I first got oak and butter. I must admit I was worried, but I plunged ahead, finding vanilla cream, pear, apple, and spice.  In the mouth I found apple, pear, tropical notes, pineapple, and spice.  Only a touch of butter showed on the finish of the wine, and not in a bad way, it made the finish quite smooth.  After a bit of a rocky start, the oak and butter blew off from the nose revealing a wine with nice acidity.
