Holiday Tasting at Penny Lane Pub

While visiting my parents in CT, we went to the Penny Lane Pub in Old Saybrook. My Dad’s friend Dave is the beverage manager there and he hosts approximately monthly wine tastings paired with food. It just so happened that the holiday tasting (served with an AMAZING turkey dinner) was going to be while I was visiting, so off we went. Each month has a theme…usually a single producer, but sometimes based around a variety. Holiday wines was meant to show what might work and what might not with a turkey dinner with the fixings and a delicious pumpkin creme brulee made by Dave himself!

2007 Claiborne and Churchill Gweurztraminer: $17. Lychee, honey, almonds, honeysuckle, floral, spice, grapey, apricot, pear, peach, tropical notes. This was my favorite of the evening.

2007 E Guilal Cote Du Rhone Rose: $18. Lime, strawberry, candied raspberry, dry, acidic.

2007 Angeline Sonoma County Chardonnay: $17. Apple butter, pear, slight oak, some malo, apple, pineapple pear, tropical notes. Did not work well with the food!

2006 Robert Hall Rhone De Robles: $19. Chocolate, flowers, red berries, acidic, plums, raisins, tart red fruit, better as it warms. A little thinner than I would like.

2006 Robert Mondavi Moscato D’oro: Floral, honey, apricot, nice acidity. Went really well with the pumpkin creme brulee.
