It’s Wily

*Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from Wily Jack Wines.

I get some interesting promotional materials with wines. The most bizarre, by far, arrived with this shipment of Wily Jack Wines. A branding iron. In the shape of Wily Jack. Now, I’m not sure what I’ll do with it, but it’s memorable to say the least. Right up front I want to say that this is the best under $10 Zinfandel I’ve ever had. It might be the best under $15 Zinfandel I’ve ever had. The 2007 Wily Jack Zinfandel clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume , had a real cork closure, and I see it retailing for as low as $8 a bottle on the internet. $8 for a Zin that totally delivers? A steal, and a crowd-pleaser.

On the nose I got dark berries, blackberries, black fruit, cedar, spice, pepper, black plum, and red berry edges. In the mouth I found blackberry, plum, earth, cedar, spice, pepper, vanilla, and red berries. I thought the wine had nice acidity, and showed smooth, fresh fruit. I really never would have pegged this as a sub-$10 wine as I try not to look at the price points for samples until after I’ve written up my notes.
