Continuing along with the Chile wines from the web-based tasting I participated in a few weeks ago, wine six of the evening happened to be a Syrah, one of my favorite red grapes! I don’t know that I’d previously had a Syrah from Chile, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect…with the Carmenere I had come to expect brooding, spicy wines, which has also been my experience with many of the Cabernet Sauvignons from Chile that I’ve had. And while I can’t attest to the “Terroir Hunter” in the name of this wine, I will say that this is a Syrah that is right up my alley. The 2007 Undurraga T.H. (Terroir Hunter) Syrah hails from the Limari Valley of Chile, has a screw cap closure, and retails for $24. While this wine, based on the flavor profile was my favorite red of the evening, I think this one might belong more along the lines of an $18 price point. $24 just seems a little steep when there are so many great Syrahs out there at just about $20 a bottle (or less).
On the nose I got huge blackberries, plums, spice, pepper, bright red berries lurking underneath, raspberries, chocolate, spice, pepper, milk chocolate, and anise. If it says anything, this and the Natura Sauvignon Blanc were the only bottles we finished the first night! In the mouth I got blackberry, black cherry, and plums. This isn’t a bottle to really contemplate, but one that’s smooth and full of big lush fruit…which I love.
