I Like the Sauvignon Blanc Better

And finally, we come to the last of the Chilean wines from the evening of the webcast.  I must admit, I was done after this one.  I’m not sure why I found the format so taxing…I often taste upwards of 70 wines in a day when I’m on the road or at a large tasting and it doesn’t really phase me.  I think it was the combination of how fast this tasting moved, trying to take notes, tweet, and ask questions of the winemakers all at the same time.  When the wines for the tasting arrived, I got excited to see a wine from Veramonte in the mix.  I love their Sauvignon Blanc, and it’s a go to white for me year after year.  Sadly, I was not as taken with this wine, the 2006 Veramonte Primus.  It’s a blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Syrah, 17% Merlot, and 16% Carmenere. It had a real cork closure and retails for $20.

On the nose I got pencil lead….lots of pencil lead. It reminded me of the summer I worked at a camp and had to sharpen several dozen pencils multiple times a day.  I also got a sense of freshly chopped wood.  My dad used to chop wood in our backyard to supply the wood-burning stove for the winter and the smell was distinct.  I found mint, cedar, herbs, meat, nutmeg, black cherry, spiced currants, and spice on the nose as well.  In the mouth I found plums, dark fruit, black cherries, herbs on the mid-palate, sage, more pencil lead.  Overall, I’d describe this wine as brooding…dark and mysterious, and a bit sharp.
