The Last of the Matthiasson’s

*Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from Matthiasson.

And I so did not want to see it go.  You may recall I wrote about the Mattiasson White and Merlot a few weeks ago.  The Matthiassons also sent me a 375 mL bottle of their 2005 Napa Valley Red. As much as I try to drink samples as they come in the door, the other Matthiasson wines impressed me so much that I wanted to save the last one! So I did….for a month or so.  However, Matt had indicated he didn’t want any wine the other night (he must have not been feeling well, right?) so I figured it would be the perfect time to open up the baby bottle of 2005 Napa Matthiasson Red Wine.  However, Matt soon foiled me because when he saw what I opened, he wanted some too!  The wine had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14.4% alcohol by volume, and retails for $75 for a regular sized bottle.

On the nose I found vanilla, cherries, blackberry, spice, pepper, brown sugar, cream, milk chocolate, raspberry, herbs, and roses.  The nose kept evolving as it aired, I wrote in my notes that I “found it delightful.” I also noted how ripe the fruits smelled, like they were ready to be plucked from the garden.
In the mouth I got bright red fruit, cherries, raspberries, blueberries, spice, flowers, white pepper, red plums, and an herbal note.

Overall, I thought the wine showed as really juicy, and had great acidity.  I’ve now tasted the entire Matthiasson line up. They are pumping out some great juice there and you should really check them out.  While all the wines were delicious, the White remains my favorite, but just by a smidge.  I look forward to visiting with the Matthiassons in July after the Wine Blogger Conference.
