Cameron Hughes, My New Love

As you may recall, while out at the Wine Blogger Conference I scored a half case of wine for finding the Cameron Hughes Reps and saying “beer.”  Sadly, I can never find them in the Costco here, though I look diligently on each trip to Costco.  Guess I’ll just have to try to win some more in July at the second annual WBC.  (PS-do you have a wine blog?  Have you registered yet?) I picked the 2005 Cameron Hughes Lot 67 Russian River Valley Syrah as one of the 6 wines for my half case.  We decided to drink it after dinner the other night.  The wine clocked in at 15% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and retails for $15.

On the nose I found cracked black pepper, mint, strawberry, cedar, spice, chocolate, berries, dark fruit, and charred fruit. A tremendous nose on an incredible value wine.  In the mouth I got flavors of plum, black fruit, black cherry, spice, pepper, violets, cracked pepper, and blackberry.  The wine had fabulous structure and acidity, and some great chewy tannins on the back palate.  Well worth the $15…I’d pay up to $25 for a wine with these characteristics.
