Up in the Clouds

*Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from the PR folks for Wines of Chile.

The Nimbus clouds that is! I’m currently enjoying a selection of Sauvignon Blancs and Viogniers courtesy of the Wines of Chile.  Easily two of my favorite white wine grapes, so I’m tickled pink to get to taste them.  And I’ve heard really good things about the Viogniers coming out of Chile, so I look forward to those! I chose the 2008 Nimbus Estate Sauvignon Blanc for the evening.  It had a screw cap closure, clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume, and retails for $12.  Sadly, it only got an 85 from the Wine Spectator…I thought it was much better than that!  Thought I have to ask….what is a Maracuyá?  The winery listed it on the label, and I haven’t a clue what it is.

On the nose I found citrus, grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime, tropical fruits, peaches, herbs, pineapples, and flowers.  Great nose!  In the mouth I got flavors of citrus, lime, peach, orange blossoms, pineapple, and other tropical fruits.  I found the wine to be crisp, lean, and clean in the mouth.  It seems less bracing than Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand while still being refreshing.  This would be a great wine for the summer heat!
